Vikki's Story

Yes, I am a parent of a child who has ADD. I also have a nephew who also is ADHD. This is very complicated because the information I get I get from my mother who lives in CA. My sister and her 3 children live in Arizona. Her oldest child is the one we are most concerned about. He is 13 years old. He came to visit my mother and that is when I found out a lot of this information.

Now I am a crazy person, I want to find out as much as I can about this disorder so I can help my mother and also so I can get my sister educated about what is going on with her son. Like I said this information is 3 Rd party. But it is very upsetting. I will try to explain as much as possible but I get very upset when I think of any child being treated like he has been treated.

1st he wears size 6 clothes, my son who is the same age and who has the same disorder wears size 14-16 clothes. 2nd he takes 100 ml of Ritalin a day (sister send daily dosage to grandmother) as he went for a visit. My son only takes .5 ml once a day and only during school, not on the weekends or during the summer. My mother has cut his dosage to only one 20 ml a day because she does not believe he NEEDS the medication every 3-4 hours.

And I agree. But I do not live with the family, but so far being out of his family environment he has done okay. Still now and then he gets out of hand but hey he is 13 years old right? I have tried to explain to my mother she needs to get the child out of his situation or else something may happen to him, he still wets the bed, he has to sneak food as my sister still does not understand that this medication causes loss of appetite. So late at night when all of that medication wears off he wants to eat, not a problem, but my sister gets angry with the child and he gets punished. He is always getting PUNISHED.... I wish I could find someone or something my mom and my sister could read or talk to somebody so he would be treated better then he is at home.

Something I got of the internet was the ADHD Manual I sent the whole file to my mom, in hopes she could copy the information and give it to my sister. It even helped my Father to understand the disorder better, as they explained how it feels having the disorder. ("Having ADHD is like being put into a dark room with things scattered around to trip you. You don't get a flashlight....but everyone else does. You trip around the room, bumping into things, until you finally learn the layout of the room. Then someone moves you to a new room, and the process starts again." I hope what information I sent to my family will help but I wish I had more. If any body knows other sites on the net with any useful information that may help PLEASE e-mail me at dharley@bellsouth.net

thank-you Vikki
