Self-Help And Support Group Information

"SIX TIPS FOR GROUP SUCCESS"

Here are six points that are important for a group to be successful The group leader must work toward the establishment of these points right from the very beginning.

As a leader and a group participant, we must be able to see and feel the positive climate of the group.

1 Self-Esteem.
Each person works to preserve the positive self esteem of group members. Communicate that you appreciate each other's ideas and attendance at the meetings.

2. Acceptance.
Learn to accept and not be critical of members of the group. You do not have to agree to get along. No one person has to be right.
3. Openness.
Be sensitive as members respond to the topic. Members are often sharing personal feelings and experiences.

4. Trust.
As members work to be honest they need to feel "safe". Members can learn that they do not need to be defensive about their ideas or feelings, nor do they need to lie or exaggerate to get acceptance by the group.
5. Understanding.
To understand you only need to listen. You don't need to analyze or diagnose each others problems. Just be there, listen and don't interrupt.
6. Caring.
Be careful to include all members of the group. Ask questions of everyone, and include everyone.
