During Gay History Month, We Have to Make Sure Gay and Lesbian Citizens Count

We’re in the midst of Gay History Month, an ideal time for this question: How much progress has been made in the 40 years since the gay liberation movement began?

Gays and lesbians entered American public life in the late 1960s, with the Stonewall Rebellion in New York City, sparked by a police raid on a gay bar. Since then, an intense campaign, marked by academic study, political lobbying and anti-defamation work has demanded recognition and respect for gays and lesbians.

GLBTQ Schools: Segregation or Safe Haven?

This year, Chicago is set to open its first high school for GLBTQ students, the Social Justice High School-Pride Campus. The school board has come under tremendous pressure for the college preparatory school, but soon-to-be principal, Chad Weiden, is confident the school will not only open, but will live up to its mission of providing a safe campus of higher learning.

As Cathy Morton watched Gov. James McGreevey's televised confession last week, she felt drawn to his wife, Dina, who stood at his side with a pained half smile frozen on her face. "I've been there," says Morton, who says she discovered her husband cruising gay Web sites five years ago. "She may not feel lucky now," says Morton, who is now divorcing, "but at least he admitted the truth and took responsibility. That's something."

Gay Youth Suicide Prevention May Be Missing The Mark

A National men's health conference held in Alice Springs has heard programs to cut suicide rates among young gay people may be missing their mark.

John Howard from the Macquarie University in Sydney says research is showing that attempted and successful suicide rates are as high as 28 per cent of young men between 15 and 17 years.
